TRAINING AND PROGRAMS # Counter-UAS Training for EOD Teams APSI delivers mission-focused Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) training for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), defense, security, and public-sector organizations responding to emerging small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) threats. [Request C-UAS Training Support](/consultation/)[Contact APSI](/contact/) Facility Clearance Top Secret facility clearance: classified storage up to the Top Secret level, processing up to the Secret level, and on-site training prepared for delivery up to the Secret level. Mission Focus ## Built for the EOD Mission Our training connects technical sUAS, electronics, FPV, and C-UAS instruction with operator-informed EOD mission integration, supported-unit coordination, incident response, exploitation support, reporting, and after-action refinement. Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, First Person View (FPV) drones, loitering munitions, and modified commercial platforms are changing how EOD teams assess hazards, support maneuver, protect fixed sites, and preserve recoverable threat information. APSI’s training is not a generic drone course. It is built around the EOD response problem: what the operator must recognize, what hazard is present, what decision is required, who must be coordinated with, and what information or evidence must be preserved for exploitation, reporting, or follow-on action. ![Uniformed operator in the field hand-launching a small quadcopter unmanned aircraft system during counter-UAS training.](/images/training/c-uas-eod/suas-operator-launch.webp) Facility Clearance APSI holds a top secret facility clearance. The company can store classified information up to the top secret level and process information up to the secret level. Training is prepared for on-site delivery up to the secret level. Course Structure ## Course Structure and Security Handling APSI delivers two non-overlapping training events. The first course establishes the foundational knowledge base for the scenario-based training, which students then operationalize through realistic, stress-inoculated practical exercises. An initial knowledge assessment will be administered on Day 1 of each course to establish a student baseline and allow instructors to calibrate depth of instruction accordingly. All training is designed and delivered at the UNCLASSIFIED level unless otherwise directed. Where classified vignettes would be required for full-fidelity operational replication, instructors will note this clearly and provide appropriate unclassified analogues. Our team is prepared to deliver classified training up to the SECRET Level on site. Government-provided information, student information, scenario outputs, after-action observations, and any marked or identified Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) will be handled in accordance with Government markings, DoDI 5200.48, Operations Security (OPSEC) requirements, and applicable contract clauses. The contractor will designate a security representative within three workdays after award. Curriculum ## What the Training Covers APSI’s EOD-focused C-UAS training can include: - sUAS and FPV threat recognition - Macro, micro, vertical takeoff and landing, and fixed-wing platform familiarization - Commercial off-the-shelf platform awareness - 3D-printed attachment and payload-indicator recognition - Electronics and microcontroller awareness for EOD hazard assessment - Firing-circuit and ordnance-modification awareness at an EOD response level - C-UAS layered defense concepts - Electronic Warfare (EW) and Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) deconfliction considerations - Incident report interpretation and follow-on questioning - Reconnaissance and standoff assessment - Avoid / Neutralize / Exploit decision-making - Recovered-platform documentation, evidence preservation, and handoff - EOD storyboards, after-action review, and Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) refinement Delivery ## Technical and Scenario-Based Training APSI can support both technical familiarization and scenario-based application. ### Technical Training Technical training can be conducted at the SimIS Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Systems (IRAS) Laboratory, supporting sUAS, robotics, autonomous systems, electronics, microcontrollers, FPV systems, and platform familiarization. ### Scenario-Based Training Scenario-based training can be conducted at other partner facilities suited to realistic field application, mission planning, incident response, supported-unit integration, exploitation support, and after-action review. Delivery and Facilities ## Mobile Training Teams or a Dedicated Lab APSI delivers this training through Mobile Training Teams (MTTs) that come to your location, or at a dedicated technical facility when the course calls for a controlled laboratory environment. This model aligns with the practical “crawl-walk-run” approach used in effective tactical training design, where students first build foundational understanding, then apply skills under guidance, and finally integrate them under realistic conditions. Response Framework ## EOD Incident Lifecycle Framework APSI structures training around a practical EOD incident lifecycle. - 1 ### Left of Launch / Left of Bang Threat awareness, supported-unit integration, Standard Operating Procedure review, intelligence coordination, EW deconfliction, mission preparation, and equipment readiness. - 2 ### Incident Notification Report interpretation, critical information extraction, follow-on questions, response prioritization, and situational awareness. - 3 ### Incident Site Operations Reconnaissance, standoff assessment, approach decisions, hazard recognition, supported-unit coordination, and Avoid / Neutralize / Exploit selection. - 4 ### Mission Continuation Support the mission, break off for exploitation or reporting, or employ a hybrid support model. - 5 ### Post-Incident Recovery Required reporting, EOD storyboards, exploitation support, TTP adjustment, lessons learned, and reconstitution for follow-on response. Instructional Design ## Instructional Design APSI designs training around performance-based learning objectives, practical application, and observable readiness outcomes. The course structure aligns with Navy-style instructional design principles, including progressive learning, terminal and enabling learning objectives, guided practical application, instructor-led debrief, and after-action improvement. Each module links technical content to EOD decision points and mission outcomes. Participants move through guided discussion, tabletop exercises, map and airspace work, and a facility-specific capstone assessment, applying each concept directly to their own environment rather than absorbing theory in a classroom. Under the guidance of experienced operators and academic faculty, teams assess a real facility and its airspace, analyze threats and vulnerabilities, and develop a layered defense concept that begins left of launch, before an aircraft is ever in the air, rather than starting at the point of detection. Unlike classroom-only or self-paced video formats and vendor product demos, this approach produces work products the organization can use immediately. WHO SHOULD ATTEND ## Workshop Audience: Planners and Officers This workshop is for planners and officers in government, military, and private sectors responsible for critical asset protection and emergency response. - Federal planners: DoD, DOJ, DOE, DHS - SLTT planners: state, local, tribal, territorial - Military planning officers - Emergency response leadership - Infrastructure officers: substations, water, stadiums - Private sector planners: corporate security venues ![APSI C-UAS Critical Infrastructure Planners Workshop session delivered on-site for a client cohort.](/images/home/cuas-course-briefing.jpeg) COURSE DELIVERY ## Delivered On-Site, Anywhere You Need It The C-UAS Critical Infrastructure Planners Workshop comes to you. The Institutional Problem ## Connect the Decisions Behind Every Lesson Complex programs lose coherence when outcomes, teaching methods, assessment, feedback, and transfer are treated as separate tasks. Faculty may be asked to cover more material, adopt a new method, or revise slides without a clear account of what learners must actually know, value, and do, or what evidence would demonstrate it. APSI helps faculty and academic leaders connect those decisions. The work begins with mission, future performance, learners, context, and constraints; it ends with practical faculty products, visible learner evidence, and a defensible plan for improvement. PROGRAM AT A GLANCE ## A Complete, Scalable Faculty Development Program Counts are exact: 14 lessons, 65.5 hours, 16 tools and appendices, and one joint-education addendum per lesson. 0 Modules in the complete sequence 0.5 Contact hours: concentrated, distributed, or modular 0 Tools and appendices for design and review 0 JPME and joint-education addenda, one per lesson Who This Service Is For ## Built for Institutions That Teach Judgment and Performance APSI faculty development supports institutions across professional, military, and higher education. - Professional military education institutions and joint schools - Defense, federal, and other government training organizations - Law-enforcement, public-safety, homeland-security, and emergency-management academies - Universities, professional schools, and continuing-education programs - Faculty-development divisions, curriculum teams, program directors, and academic leaders - Organizations onboarding subject-matter experts into instructional roles What the Engagement Can Build ## Concrete Faculty Products, Not Vague Claims Every engagement leaves the institution with usable work products. - Confidential peer-coaching processes grounded in low-inference observation, feedback, rehearsal, and follow-up - Accessible presentations that integrate message, explanation, visuals, learner action, evidence, and contingency - A disciplined approach to retrieval, spacing, cognitive load, generation, feedback, stress, emotion, and other learning-science claims - Aligned mission, program outcomes, course outcomes, lesson objectives, activities, assessments, feedback, and transfer - Curriculum maps that show contribution, practice, assessment, sequencing, gaps, and change-control decisions - Observable standards and rubrics that support consistent professional judgment - Complete, time-feasible lesson plans tailored to learner evidence and delivery constraints - Purposeful use of lecture, guided discussion, cases, problem-based learning, practice, simulation, wargaming, staff rides, seminars, presentations, and blended designs - Questioning strategies that elicit reasoning, diagnose understanding, distribute participation, and guide responsive instruction Engagement Structures ## The Full Program, a Track, a Capstone, or a Custom Scope APSI can deliver the complete Faculty Development Program, a defined developmental track, a focused capstone, or a customized contract engagement. The complete sequence produces a connected set of faculty work products; defined tracks and individual modules can also be scoped to an institution’s requirements. How the program is offered Institutions receive either the module set exactly as listed here or a custom build developed to their own requirements. The program is scalable, so it can be delivered to a single department or across an entire faculty, and it is adaptable, so modules, sequence, contact hours, and applied work can be rebuilt around the mission, curriculum, and constraints an institution already operates under. ### Foundation Common language, philosophy, adult learners, learner variability, and classroom culture. 01 Overview and Fundamentals 2.5 hours + Establish a common language for education, training, instruction, assessment, learning, and development. Faculty diagnose the alignment of an existing lesson and select one evidence-informed improvement tied to learner, content, context, and constraints. Participant product: Alignment diagnostic. 02 Educational Philosophies 3 hours + Compare behaviorist, cognitivist, constructivist, social, experiential, humanistic, and transformative lenses. Faculty identify the assumptions embedded in instructional decisions and defend a blended design without treating any single philosophy as universally correct. Participant product: Philosophy-to-design defense. 03 Adult Learning 3.5 hours + Translate adult-learning theory into practical decisions about prior knowledge, relevance, agency, problem orientation, guidance, accessibility, psychological safety, and workplace transfer. Faculty redesign a content-centered segment around a real professional problem and explicit performance standards. Participant product: Adult-learning redesign. 04 Learning and Teaching Styles 3.5 hours + Replace prescriptive learning-style matching with an evidence-informed model of learner variability. Faculty distinguish preferences, abilities, strategies, prior knowledge, motivation, accessibility needs, and task demands, and redesign instruction without labeling learners or lowering standards. Participant product: Learner-variability redesign. 05 Creating and Maintaining Classroom Culture 3 hours + Treat classroom culture as a designed condition for learning rather than a matter of personality or rapport. Faculty establish norms, expectations, and psychological safety in the opening minutes of a course; sustain them through participation structures, questioning, error handling, and feedback; and repair them when candor, preparation, or professional respect breaks down. The module addresses mixed-rank, mixed-service, interagency, and international seminar rooms, where status, culture, and language shape who speaks and what gets examined. Participant product: Classroom culture plan and norm-setting sequence. ### Design Curriculum, learning domains, objectives and standards, and complete lesson planning. 06 Curriculum Development (ISD/CDS) 6 hours + Use Instructional Systems Design and Curriculum Development System practices as iterative, evidence-seeking processes. Faculty connect mission need and graduate role to outcomes, assessment, learning architecture, implementation, evaluation, stakeholder review, accessibility, and change control. Participant product: Design chain and curriculum map. 07 Domains of Learning 4 hours + Use cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains to clarify the change a lesson seeks and the evidence that can reveal it. Faculty apply the Modified Bloom's Taxonomy (Anderson and Krathwohl) and design observable evidence for integrated professional performance. Participant product: Domain and evidence map. 08 Lesson Objectives and Standards of Behavior 5 hours + Convert broad intent into student-centered, observable, assessable outcomes. Faculty write action, condition, and standard; align objectives with assessment, activities, and feedback; and construct performance criteria and calibrate judgments using common learner work. Participant product: Objective-alignment package. 09 Lesson Planning: Designing and Tailoring Lessons 6 hours + Build a flexible lesson architecture informed by Madeline Hunter, Gagné, explicit instruction, active learning, retrieval, and transfer. Faculty design from outcomes and learner evidence, then tailor sequence, guidance, time, participation, accessibility, and contingency. Participant product: Complete lesson plan. ### Practice Teaching methods, questioning, peer coaching, and effective presentations. 10 Teaching Methods 10 hours + Develop a purposeful repertoire across interactive lecture, guided discussion, case method, problem-based learning, demonstration and practice, simulation, wargaming, staff rides, seminars, student presentations, and blended or flipped designs. Selection begins with the required learning, not the method label. Participant product: Method selection and facilitation revision. 11 Questioning Skills 4 hours + Design and facilitate questions that elicit thinking, diagnose understanding, guide discussion, distribute participation, and promote transfer. The module modernizes lead-off, anticipated-response, and follow-up structures with wait time, retrieval, evidence use, and responsive decision rules. Participant product: Questioning map. 12 Peer Coaching 6 hours + Establish peer coaching as a confidential, goal-directed improvement process distinct from formal supervision. Faculty contract for a focus, collect low-inference evidence, conduct a learner-centered debrief, rehearse an alternative, and plan follow-up. Participant product: Peer-coaching cycle. 13 Effective Presentations 4 hours + Treat presentation as an instructional system, not a slide-deck performance. Faculty align message, spoken explanation, visuals, learner processing, interaction, accessibility, rehearsal, audience evidence, and contingency while avoiding rigid slide-count and attention-span myths. Participant product: Presentation storyboard and segment. ### Integration Learning science, neuromyth resistance, and local evidence for retention and transfer. 14 The Latest in Educational Neuroscience 5 hours + Translate reliable cognitive and educational science into instructional decisions while separating neural observation, cognitive mechanism, behavioral evidence, and classroom recommendation. Topics include attention, working memory, retrieval, spacing, interleaving, generation, feedback, stress, sleep, emotion, and neuromyth resistance. Participant product: Claim-evidence-action-limit brief. How APSI Works ## Engagements Built Around Real Faculty Work Faculty development is most useful when participants improve the work they are actually responsible for. APSI structures engagements around authentic institutional and faculty products rather than isolated technique demonstrations. - 01 ### Scope the performance need Clarify mission, future performance, faculty roles, learners, approved outcomes, evidence requirements, delivery conditions, and constraints. - 02 ### Select the engagement architecture Choose the complete program, a developmental track, selected modules, or a combined faculty-development and curriculum-services scope. - 03 ### Apply concepts to real work Participants diagnose, map, design, rehearse, teach, assess, coach, and revise using relevant curriculum and lesson artifacts. - 04 ### Use evidence and feedback Faculty make learner thinking visible, compare performance with standards, receive feedback, and document defensible revisions. - 05 ### Support transfer and continuous improvement The engagement connects classroom evidence with follow-up application, local review, curriculum governance, and future development priorities. Delivery principle The 65.5 contact hours may be delivered as a concentrated institute, a distributed faculty-development sequence, or selected modules embedded in onboarding. Prerequisites and spaced application are preserved so participants repeatedly revise real work, practice, receive feedback, and return with learner evidence. JPME and Joint-Education Tailoring ## One Core Program. A Distinct JPME and Joint-Education Addendum in Every Lesson. The core curriculum applies across professional education. Each lesson also includes a separate addendum for Joint Professional Military Education programs, for joint education that sits outside JPME, and for partner-school contexts. For Joint Professional Military Education programs, APSI support is designed to be tailored to the institution’s approved mission, program and course learning outcomes, assessment plan, authentic performance requirements, faculty responsibilities, classification and security rules, accessibility obligations, and curriculum-governance process. For joint education that is not JPME, the same outcomes-based quality practices apply. Accreditation statement APSI Joint Professional Military Education content meets the Process for Accreditation of Joint Education (PAJE) requirements set out in the current Officer Professional Military Education Policy, CJCSI 1800.01G. Coverage extends up to JPME Level 2. Awarding credit and completing accreditation remain acts of the authorized institution and the controlling Joint Staff processes. APSI supplies the content, faculty capability, and evidence those processes require. Accreditation consulting: On the military side, APSI consults on the PAJE accreditation process. Our faculty and staff have worked with PAJE and with regional accreditation across multiple colleges, universities, and JPME institutions, including senior service colleges and war colleges. Methodology ## Evidence and Research Basis APSI uses educational frameworks to organize judgment, not to replace it. Each instructional recommendation must fit the learner, task, evidence, context, and constraints. Legacy models remain where they offer useful functions or vocabulary; their limitations are taught explicitly. - The Modified Bloom's Taxonomy (Anderson and Krathwohl) is mapped to the complete learner task, knowledge dimension, conditions, standards, and direct evidence, not assigned from a verb alone. - Adult-learning principles are treated as design variables to examine, not biological laws attached to age. - Learning-style matching is not prescribed. Learner variability, prior knowledge, accessibility, strategy, motivation, and task demands guide adaptation. - Active learning is defined by what learners do cognitively with content, not by whether a method has an active-sounding label. - Retrieval, spacing, manageable complexity, generation, varied practice, feedback, and transfer are applied with stated boundary conditions. - Educational-neuroscience claims must show a defensible chain from neural observation to cognitive mechanism, behavioral evidence, and instructional action. ENGAGE APSI ## Strengthen the system behind every lesson. Scope an APSI faculty-development engagement around your institution's mission, faculty, curriculum, evidence requirements, and constraints. [Book a Consultation](/consultation/)[View all training programs](/training/) Our Approach ## Coaching on Your Own Original Research This is a coaching program. Candidates do their own original work, and APSI faculty guide them through it, from early framing through the defense. Regardless of field of study, APSI faculty have coached students across the STEM and liberal-arts fields. The Research Process ## Coaching at Every Stage of the Research Process APSI coaches candidates through every stage of the thesis and dissertation process. - Introduction - Literature Review - Methods - Experimentation - Conclusion - Dissertation and Thesis Defense What the Coaching Includes ## Practical, Original-Work Coaching Cross-referenced against the stages of your research, coaching can include: - Research question development, including enhanced techniques to narrow your question - Coaching you to build Chapter 1 as an effective backbone for the rest of your study - Learning to begin your Chapter 5 while you are still developing your Chapter 2 literature review - Developing your literature as a conceptual genealogy that captures the full set of factors and variables, using advanced techniques that can shave months to years off your timeline while helping you identify the gap you aim to fill - Coaching for research methods, including statistical analysis - Templates that do not detract from the originality of your study - Presentation coaching for the thesis and dissertation defense, including conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and literature review - Mock defense panels Research Design ## Selecting the Right Design APSI coaches candidates in choosing and executing the right research design, across the three main categories. 1 ### Qualitative In *Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design*, John W. Creswell identifies five major qualitative research approaches. Each serves a distinct purpose, with different philosophical assumptions, data-collection techniques, and reporting structures. - Narrative ResearchStudies the lives of individuals by asking them to share stories about their experiences, which the researcher then re-stories into a chronological narrative. - PhenomenologyDescribes the lived experiences of individuals surrounding a specific concept or phenomenon, aiming to uncover the fundamental essence of those experiences. - Grounded TheoryFocuses on generating or discovering a general, abstract theory of a process, action, or interaction grounded deeply in the views of the participants. - EthnographyInvestigates an entire cultural or social group in a natural setting over a prolonged period, typically through observation and interviews. - Case StudyInvolves an in-depth, detailed exploration of a bounded system, such as a specific program, event, activity, or individual, over time. 2 ### Quantitative Methods - Experimental - Quasi-Experimental - Descriptive - Correlational - Longitudinal Statistical program coaching - R - SPSS - Excel - and more Plus statistical analysis coaching to interpret and defend your results. 3 ### Mixed Methods Coaching for mixed-methods designs that combine qualitative and quantitative approaches within a single study, including embedded, exploratory sequential, explanatory sequential, and convergent parallel designs. ![Types of mixed methods research designs: Embedded (collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data at the same time, but one method is secondary to the other); Exploratory sequential (qualitative data collection and analysis occurs first, followed by quantitative data collection and analysis); Explanatory sequential (begin with quantitative data collection and analysis, followed by qualitative data collection and analysis); and Convergent parallel (qualitative and quantitative data are collected at the same time but analyzed separately, then the results are compared to make conclusions).](/images/training/mixed-methods-designs.webp) Templates and Tools ## Templates for Every Section of the Manuscript Coaching is supported by templates that carry a candidate through the structure of the manuscript, section by section, so effort goes into the research rather than into working out what each section is supposed to do. Introductory Paragraph Problem Statement Purpose Statement Research Question Nature of the Study Theoretical (quantitative) and Conceptual (qualitative) Framework Significance of the Study Definitions Assumptions, Limitations, and Scope/Delimitations Summary Additional Guidance ### Ensuring Alignment The problem statement, purpose statement, and research question have to agree with one another before anything downstream will hold together. Coaching treats that alignment as its own step rather than assuming it. ### Literature Review The heaviest chapter, and where the coaching saves the most time. - How to build an effective conceptual genealogy that lays out the history of your topic and makes the gaps in the literature obvious, along with how your study fills that gap. - A format that shortens the time needed to identify topical and research gaps your study covers. Candidates save an average of 30 percent, which can be months or more. - How to begin writing Chapter 5 before the experiment is finished, without smuggling in untested conclusions. Saves an estimated three to five months of writing. ENGAGE APSI ## Discuss coaching for your candidates. Book a consultation to discuss thesis and dissertation coaching, or call APSI directly.
